Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Tucked away at Idukki district, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary spreads over an area of 90 sqkm. Declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1984, it lies in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats. You can spot a rare giant grizzled squirrel only here in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to tigers, elephant, bonnet macaques, gaur, Kraits, spotted deer, spectacled cobras, sambar, turtles, vipers, little cormorants, darters and black eagles. The gorgeous green around ranges from dry deciduous forest, high shoals to thorny scrub forests and wet grasslands. The place is also perfect for boating and trekking. The undulating nature of the relief with rugged areas heighten the effect.

Eravikulam National Park

Cuddled amidst the Idukki district, Eravikulam National Park spreads over an area of 97 sqkm. Declared as a sanctuary in 1975, it was originally established with the purpose of protecting the Nilgiri tahr. The wildlife variety includes Tigers, panthers, wild dogs, civet cats, jungle cats, sloth bears, Nilgiri langurs and wild boars. The floral diversity which abounds in evergreen forests and lush grasslands, is sure to amaze you. The southern side of the Park features the famous peak of Anamudi(2694 mt.)

Kumarakom Bird Santuary

Nestled on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom Bird Santuary is spread over an area of 14 acres. A heaven for bird-lovers, this sanctuary attracts avian species of migratory category, some from the Himalayas and some even from as far as Siberia. You can spot here a siberian stork, egret, darter, heron or a teal. The local varieties include kingfishers, egrets, night herons, golden-backed woodpeckers, paradise fly-catchers, cuckoos, wood beetle, waterfowl, water duck and the list is just endless.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Cuddled amidst the Cardamom hills region of the Western Ghats, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary holds the credit of being one of the largest and most frequented wildlife reserves in India. Spread over an area of 777 sqkm., it was declared a National Park in 1982. Labelled as one of the best spots for watching tigers and leopards, this sanctuary includes other wildlife varieties of elephant, wild pig, sambar, gaur, Malabar flying squirrel, stripe-necked mongoose and over 260 species of birds including blue-winged parakeet, Nilgiri wood pigeon, white-bellied tree pie, laughing thrushes and flycatchers.

Silent Valley National Park

Tucked away at a distance of 40km. from Mannarkkad, Silent valley spreads over an area of 90 sqkm. The Silent Valley National Park is the core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. An astonishing variety of peninsular mammals, over a 100 species of butterflies and 400 species of moths and other wild species like the Ceylon Frog Moth, Great Indian Hornbill, the Nilgiri Laughing Thrush and the Lion-tailed Macaque constitute the wildlife diversity here.
