Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the study of digestive system and the disorders related to it. Gastroenterology, the name is of Greek origin as it is derived from 3 Greek words. These are, 'gastros' (stomach), 'enteron' (intestine) and 'logos' (reason).

Some of the major tests and surgeries involving Gastroenterology are given here under:-

Endoscopy (UGI Endoscopy)
Endoscopy or UGI Endoscopy is used for viewing the upper GI tract which comprises the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Endoscopy is used to detect abnormal growths in stomach, bowel obstruction, hiatal hernia, inflammation, precancerous condition and ulcers.

The upper GI endoscopy test has to be done in empty stomach. The patient is strictly prohibited from smoking and chewing gums during this period when the test is being conducted. An alternative method is to use barium x-ray and ultrasound (sonogram) for medical examination.

Endoscopy Pseudocyst Drainage
This method is used to detect a condition called acute pancreatitis. Here, a fluid that is formed as a result of acute pancreatitis is collected. Depending on the condition of the pseudocyst, surgical drainage is performed. The surgery involves an open incision or it is done with the help of laparoscopic devices that are inserted through small incisions.

If the patient is suffering from symptoms like fever or chills, continual abdominal pain, drainage from any incision, then a proper physician should be consulted immediately.

Colonoscopy (Full Length)
Colonoscopy is yet another method used for seeing the large intestine which includes the colon and the rectum. Colonoscopy detects any inflamed tissue, ulcers and abnormal growths. Besides detecting sudden changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding from the anus and weight loss, Colonoscopy is also used for identifying any early symptom of colorectal cancer.

The patient who has been detected with any of the above-mentioned symptoms has to take a clear liquid diet (as prescribed by the physician) for 1 to 3 days before the test is conducted.

ERCP (Diagnostic)
ERCP is another term for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography. In case of problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas, gallstones in the bile duct, inflammatory strictures, leaks (from trauma and surgery) and cancer, doctors use this method.

The process involves the use of X-rays and an endoscope for this test. The doctor first sees the interior portion of the stomach and the duodenum. Then he injects dyes into the ducts through the biliary tree and pancreas. This is done in order to be identified through X- rays. This entire process may vary from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Gall Bladder Surgery
In the traditional method the gallbladder is removed by making an incision in the abdomen which is usually 5 to 8 inches deep.

Capsule Endoscopy (In patients)
This method is used to see the digestive track images. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001.

Lap. Cholesystectomy
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is an advanced method used for removing the gallbladder. As the name suggests, a laparoscope is used to remove the gallbladder. This method is even more effective than the traditional method which involves surgery.

Hernia Repair
A defect in the abdominal wall is known as hernia. Hernia may either be present in the patient at the time of his birth, or it may develop over a span of time. The common symptoms involved in hernia are a lump in the groin area when the person is standing or straining, pain at the site of the lump, swelling of the scrotum, severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. The two methods used for repairing hernia are open surgery and laparoscopic surgery.
