Radiation Oncology

Radiation Oncology is a treatment used in cancer. In this method, ionized radiation is used to control the growth of malignant cells and tissues. Sometimes, this method is also used to check the further growth of cancerous tissues. In this case, it is known as palliative care.

Radiation Oncology is usually used as a primary therapy in the cure of cancer. Sometimes, it is also used with surgery, chemotherapy or hormone transplantation. The amount of radiation that is to be given to the patient is decided by the doctor. It is measured in grays.

Usually, 3 types of radiotherapy are used. These are; External Beam Radiotherapy, Teletherapy and Unsealed Source Radiotherapy.

Procedure
Radiation Oncology is used to destroy the DNA cells by means of a photon, electron or a proton beam. This is done by directly/indirectly ionizing the atoms that constitutes the DNA.

Side Effects
The side effects of Radiation Oncology are quite obvious. These include damages to the epithelium or the epithelial tissues. The other disadvantages are infertility, swelling, tiredness or fatigue, fibrosis, loss of hair and a sensation of dryness on the area that has been exposed to radiation.

Types of Radiation Oncology

a)Palliative Radiation
Palliative Radiation aims at improving the patient's quality of life. It is primarily used to control the symptoms in connection with localized tumors that cannot be removed surgically. This is used to provide relief to patients who suffer from pain or bleeding.

A patient diagnosed with Palliative Radiation will be treated on the 1st, 7th and 21st days in the same month. The patient cannot consume any food after 8.00 pm on the night preceding the therapy. Each session takes 2-3 hours and requires the patient to be anestheticised. No pain is involved during the treatment.

b)Extended Palliative Radiation
In Extended Palliative Radiation the treatment is extended for a week (3-4 weeks). The procedure remains the same as above.

c)Curative Radiation (Simple & Complex)
Curative Radiation is given to patients who are treated with cancer. In this form of treatment, the concerned area is exposed to radiation without affecting the neighboring tissues. This method is very useful for patients who have leukemia or lymphatic cancer. The intensity of the radiation beams determine whether the Curative Radiation applied is simple or complex.

Conventional External Beam Radiotherapy
This is a form of Radiation Oncology in which, measured amounts of radiation are used on the target cells in order to localize the growth of the malignant tissues/cells that cause cancerous tumors. Sometimes, this may be uses as a primary treatment for cancer depending upon the location, type and the stage of the tumor.

Radiation Oncology is generally used to treat leukemia, lymphoma (usually most of them), germ cell tumors, epithelial cancers, melanoma skin cancer, cancer in the head and neck, lung cancer (non small cell), cervical cancer, anal cancer, prostrate cancer and metastatic cancers.

Radiation therapy usually damages the healthy cells also. Therefore, it is advised that you consult the doctor before going for any session related to this.
