Breast Implant
Saline and Silicone gel implants are the two primary types of breast implants.
Silicone rubber shell filled with aseptic saline liquid are what the saline implants are made of while the silicone gel implants have silicone shell filled with viscid silicone gel.
Apollo Hospital's Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Department is at par to international standards. It treats deformities, injury related conditions and personal grooming requirements.
1. Saline Breast Implants
Before one undergoes breast augmentation surgery with implants one can make choices regarding the surgery. One can either choose to implant saline or silicone implants. A saline breast implant is a pouch made of silicone rubber or elastomer. This is surgically inserted under the chest tissue or muscle and then filled with saline water through a valve. The texture of saline implants varies. Saline implants cause visible rippling and appears less natural than silicone gel implants. If the saline implants ruptures saline is released and the empty implants can be removed and replaced.
2. Silicone Gel Breast Implants
In 70s the silicone implants had thick shells and thick silicone gels but today silicone implants have multiple layers of silicone elastomer around the implant. These implants are pre filled and are ordered by the surgeon. The shape of a silicone gel implant cannot be changed. Longer incisions are to be made to implant them and they produce a firmer and softer effect than saline implants.
Three types of incisions can do the augmentation procedure:
Inframammary is one of the implant technique where the surgeon places an incision below the breast. This technique conceals a scar and is the most commonly used procedure.
Transaxillary is a implant technique which requires an incision to be made in the armpit. This procedure leaves no scar visible on the breast and can be performed with an endoscope.
Transumbilical is an incision placed in the naval and the disection tunnels. This technique does not leave any visible marks on the breast and can be performed through endoscope. This method is in limited use for saline implants.
Transabdominoplasty is a method where implants are done from the abdomen when the patient also undergoes abdominoplasty procedure.
Periareolar is the incision done in the area adjacent to the areolar border.
Implants have said to help patients psychologically but when the implants have not been a success generally many medical complication arises which can be dangerous or relatively much simpler.
