Bikaner in Rajasthan was formed when Rathore Prince, Rao Bikaji, son of the founder of Jodhpur, Rao Jodhaji, crossed the Thar Desert and set up a bastion called Bikaner in the 15th century after he formed a political alliance with the Mughal Emperor Akbar. However, he managed to carve out a state named after him only after a struggle of 30 years. As it is situated on an ancient trade route, Bikaner evolved into a land of riches because of the treasure that flowed in from camel trade en route to and from China, Central Asia and the Middle East. Later during British colonial rule in India, Bikaner supplied some of the best riding camels to the British forces.
