History of City Palace in Udaipur

City Palace in Udaipur was built by Maharana Udai Singh of the ruling the Sisodia clan. This palace in Udaipur overlooking Lake Pichola, shows an amazing blend of European and Chinese architecture. Made of granite and marble, this palace was initially constructed by Maharana Uday Singh but his descending Maharanas added various other structures inside the premise of the palace. Incedentally, all the later structures bear similarity in the architectural principle.

Features of City Palace in Udaipur

  • A portion of the City Palace was later converted into a museum which contains arms and armor, paintings and photographs
  • You have to enter the palace through the 'Elephant Gate' or the 'Hathi Pol.'
  • You will reach the first gate through the 'Bara Pol' or the 'great gate' which again will lead to Tripolia or the 'triple gate'. There are eight arches between the two gates. Following this area, there is an arena where the elephant fights were staged.
  • There are four main and several minor palaces like Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Joy, Dilkhusha Mahal, Moti Mahal, or Palace of Pearls, Sheesh Mahal, or the palace of mirrors and glass and Krishna Mahal
  • Mor Chowk is famous for its peacock motif in mosaic.
  • Bada Mahal is a garden palace built on a natural rock
  • Laxmi Vilas Chowk is an art gallery which has Mewar paintings
  • From Amar Vilas, you can see the town and lake Pichola.
