History of Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, earlier known as the Chintamani fort, was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha, who founded Jodhpur. This fort on Bhaurcheeria hill and 122 meters above the plain, was enclosed by eight Pols or gates.

History says that when Rao Jodha became the fifteenth Rathore ruler in 1458, he relocated his capital to Mehrangarh. A hermit Cheeria Nathji, who stayed on Bhaurcheeria hill was compelled to vacate his home when the fort was founded. As a result he cursed the king and a scared Jodha built a house and a temple in the fort for the sage.
