Also known as Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary, this bird sanctuary in Rajasthan's Bharatpur , spreads across 29 square kilometers and houses more than 380 species of birds. Created as an artificial location by the Maharaja of Bharatpur in 1890, Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary got its name from God Keoladeo, part of Lord Shiva, who was worshipped in a temple within the premises of the sanctuary. With a rich variety of birds- both home-grown and those migrating from Siberia, Central Asia and China in the winters , Bharatput Bird Sanctuary was declared a national park in 1982 and classified as a World Heritage Site in 985.
Wildlife in Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
In this bird-watcher's paradise , you will spot c ranes, pelicans, geese, ducks, eagles, hawks, shanks, stints, wagtails, warblers, wheatears, flycatchers, buntings, larks and pipits. While terrestrial birds like grey partridge, black partridge and jungle fowl nest on can be seen in Summer, the migrant birds including Siberian Crane flock to this place from Central Asia, Mongolia and Siberia in winter.
There are many other wildlife like nilgai (blue bull), sambhar, jungle cat, jackals, otters, fishing cats and mongoose in Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Even reptiles and fishes can be seen in the marshes
