The St. James Church date back to the first half of the 19th century and is the oldest church in Delhi. The construction of the church began in the year 1828 and after 8 years it was completed. James Skinner is the builder of St. James Church.
The St. James Church is modeled on the Classical Renaissance style of architecture but it does not strictly adhere to the classical norms. Begum Samroo had earlier built a church in Sardana and it is believed that Skinner was very much inspired by the church. Robert Smith and De Bude were the architects of this beautiful church. They tried to recreate the glory of St. Paul's cathedral in London.
The altar of the Church is towards the east. As there are porches on all sides of the building, there are three entrances to it as well. Mughal influences are perceived. The steps that lead you on to the church are decorated with floral motifs in marble.
The dome of the St. James Church bears a close resemblance to the dome of the Florence Cathedral in Venice in Italy. It is supported by central columns. Just beneath the dome is the sitting area of the church. It is octagonal shaped and centrally located. The dome is embellished with floral patterns being inspired by the Mughal style.
The St. James Church was badly damaged at the time of the revolt of 1857. Bullets shot resulted in the formation of many holes in the dome. The ball and the cross on top of the dome were also spoilt during this tumultuous period.
