History of Hawa Mahal in Jaipur
Hawa Mahal in Jaipur or the palace of the winds was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. This palace in Jaipur, was originally built so that the women of the royal household can watch the din ad bustle of life and various processions of the city from the palace. So it can be understood why the palace has so many tiny windows and screened balconies. The display of Mughal and Rajputana architecture in this palace, will impress you as you watch the building drenched in golden light at sunset.

  -   Hawa Mahal in Jaipur looks like a five-storied pyramid which has various small windows and screens with arched roofs. The back side of the palace has a number of pillars and passages while the front is decorated with intricate carving.
  -   It has 953 sandstone windows known as 'Jharokhas' from which you can get wonderful view of the city.
  -   There is also a small archaeological museum there. Fresco painting and inlaid mirror work were used to create a fantasy world of color and grandeur.
  -   The façade makes the palace look like a screen than a palace. The shield is fifty-foot high but less than a foot in thickness with 900 niches, semi-octagonal bays, carved sandstone grills, finials and domes.

  -   The openings of the palace appear like peepholes which are partially blocked by fine latticework in lime plaster and with plain wooden windows.
