History of Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur
Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur or the Fort of Victory, stands 15 kilometers
away from Jaipur amidst stony, shrub-filled hills. Meant to
protect both Jaipur and Amer, this fort in Jaipur is a full-fledged
citadel on Chilh ka Tola (Hill of Eagles)and was built by Sawai
Jai Singh of Jaipur in 1726.
Legend says that whenever Man Singh I or his successors won
treasures in a war, they preserved it in the Jaigarh Fort. Indian
Government officials later tried to retrieve the remnants of
the treasure by digging the fort in 1976 but in vain.
Features of Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur
- Jaivana, the world's largest cannon on wheels, was
constructed in the foundry of the fort in 1720, and its barrel
alone weighs 50 tons.
- The ramparts and wide water channels formed a very
efficient system for rainwater harvesting and bringing in water
from across the hills into the underground tanks of the fort.
- Vijay Garh , the Armoury contains a 50-kg cannonball,
various swords, shields, muskets, war bugles, armor and guns
- Other than military treasures, the Museum has photos
of old Jaipur, its royalties, and royal processions
- Diwa Burj, the seven-storied watchtower will let you
have excellent view of Jaipur and the fort
- You can also visit the gardens, a granary, beautiful
palace rooms and temples
