The event acts as a platform for discussing issues that concern the Indian Diaspora and the development of India. First Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was celebrated in the year 2003 from January 9th to 11th.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is usually a three-day affair and is organized by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India. The aim of the fifth Pravasi Bhartiya Divas is to integrate the expertise of Indian overseas community with the development process of India and in the process benefiting them mutually.
The event promotes the understanding and relation of the Indian Diaspora with India and attempts to involve their expertise in the development process. Although Pravasi Bharatiya Divas does not have a long history, it has played a significant role in the development in India.
Most striking instance lies in the third Pravasi Bhartiya Divas in 2005 when the Tsunami-struck southern coasts of India was struggling to restore normalcy and the event raised millions of dollars for the rehabilitation of the victims.
Speakers like Nobel laureate Amartya Sen had graced the plenums and issues like Dual Citizenship, Voting Right for the NRIs and heated up the sessions in the second Pravasi Bhartiya Divas, the year before.
The Fourth Pravasi Bhartiya Divas in 2006 had witnessed significant developments in policy making and enhancing cooperation in the fields of knowledge network, opportunities in education, Indian Diaspora youth.
Eminent NRIs who have made outstanding contributions have been awarded the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman by the President of India regularly.
