Also known as the Dwaraka of the South, Guruvayoor is one of the most sacred and important pilgrim centers of Kerala where the famous Sree Krishna Temple is situated. This temple hosts the maximum number of marriages and rice feeding ceremonies (the ritual first meal for infants) drawing a huge number of devotees from all parts of the country.
History
Legend has it that the idol of the Sri Krishna Temple used to have been worshipped by Lord Brahma himself at Dwaraka and was gifted to Vishnu in his Krishnavataram. After Lord Krishna left for his heavenly abode and the holy city of Dwaraka was to be submerged, 'Guru', the 'preceptor of the gods' and 'Vayu', the 'god of winds', with the help of Parasurama, installed the idol at this place where Shiva and Parvati waited to welcome them.
This was also the place of the historic movement of 'Guruvayoor Sathyagraha', demanding temple entry rights for the 'so called' lower castes.
Features
The Outer Enclosure holds a 33.5mt. tall gold-plated flagpost, known as 'Dwajastambham'. The 7mt. high 'Deepastambham' or the pillar of lamps with its thirteen circular receptacles provide an amazing sight to behold, when lit. The square 'Sreekovil' is the sacred sanctum sanctorum of the temple, housing the main deity. The walls here are embellished with exquisite mural paintings and carvings. The temple also holds the images of Ganapathy, Sree Ayyappa and Edathedathy Kavil Bhagavathy. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple.
Time To Visit
The sanctum is open from 3 am to 10pm. There is a break between 1300 and 1600 when it remains closed, a continuous series of pujas, rites and processions are performed till the temple closes at 10pm

The nearest international airport is at Nedumbassery, 58 kms away. Nedumbassery is also the nearest railway station. Trichur is easily accessible by road from all the major towns and cities of India.
