"Science may set limits to knowledge but should not set limits to imagination"- Bertrand Russell
In 1974 a unique structure had been raised in the hub of Delhi which is a magnificent epitome of Indian science and mind mingled together in perfect proportion. Situated near the Connaught Place, it is actually an Astronomical observatory that had been elevated by Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur.
There are numerous instruments kept inside the Jantar Mantar, in order to keep a track of the various Astronomical movements.
Yet the main task of Jantar Mantar is to narrate the achievements under the Rajput kings in the field of Astronomy and their attempt for technological progress. There is a history behind this incident.
This was that the king Jai Singh while on a visit to the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah's court confronted a conflict between the Muslim and the Hindu astronomers on the topic of planetary position.
So Jai Singh came forward and supplied a solution to the emperor, which was readily accepted. Thus the splendid Jantar Mantar was created.
The main places of interest around Jantar Mantar are:
Rashtrapati Bhavan: This is a huge manor that has been constructed while the British were still in India and the architect of this place was Edwin Landseer Lutyens. While the capital was shifted from Kolkata to Delhi, this place had been constructed for the Viceroy of India.
India Gate: It is a marvelous structure that has been erected in commemoration of the dead soldiers of the 1st World War.
Gurdwara Bangla Sahib: It is the built in memory of Guru Harkrishan Singh, one of the Sikh Gurus, near the Connaught Palace. It is a major pilgrim site for the Sikhs.
Humayun Mandir: It has been erected by Humayun's wife after his death.
