History of Jama Masjid

"A living Masjid is one that remembers the past, lives in the present, and works for the future."

The colossal Mosque, also known as Masjid-i-Jahan Numa, (meaning the mosque commanding a view of the world) was erected by Shah Jahan, Akbar's grandson, in1656, avoiding the pseudo-Italian style, much in vogue during that time.

Reflecting the Mughal architectural skill, it reinforces the impact of enormity by its two minarets and three domes, and stand opposite to the Red Fort in Delhi. 25,000 people can be accommodated in its courtyard, well lined with the dimension of 76 x 66mts; with 260 pillars sustaining 15 domes, of diverse altitudes designed from comprehensive Hindu and Muslim architectural technique, enhance the grandeur of the Mosque.

"A Muslim without a Masjid is like a bee without a hive"

So, one cannot ignore the worth of a Mosque for a Muslim. The Mosque Gate is 35, 39 and 33 steps from the Eastern, Northern and Southern side respectively, the path lined by bazaars with stalls and conversion activities. There used to be a Madrassah in the Southern end, but the 1857 Mutiny destroyed it.

Facing the west the Mosque is enclosed on its other three sides by open vaulted arcades, each with an elegant tower like access at its foyer. The entire Mosque is 261ft x 90ft, with a prayer hall at its hub, and the floor of the Mosque is covered with alternate stripes of White and Black marbles to match the Muslim prayer mat dcor.

"Why look for a perfect Masjid? You would feel out of place attending it."

The 2006 Blast, within the Jama Masjid, had a tremendous impact in the minds of the Muslims. It was a Friday, a day of their worship. But Allah saved the Mosque; it was banked itself from the dent. And it stands, elegantly in the heart of the city of Delhi.
