Introduction
Shankar's International Dolls Museum, built by well known political cartoonist, K Shankar Pillai, has the largest collection of dolls. The museum houses dolls from India as well as foreign countries like Australia, America, Africa and U.K. There is a separate dolls workshop along with the museum. The dolls are handcrafted after in-depth research about the physical characteristics, dress and other attributes.
In the early fifties, a Hungarian President gifted Shankar had gifted a doll as a prize for Shankar's International Children's Competition. This inspired Shankar began collecting dolls and started a dolls museum himself.
The museum started in 1965 and was inaugurated by Dr S Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. He named the building Nehru House. The museum now has a collection of over 6500 dolls from over 85 countries.
