There are many mammals in this park. While the tigers are most famous along with the Indian elephants, you will also find gaur, sambar (horse deer), barking deer, mouse deer, Dholes (Indian wild dogs), mongoose and leopards here. If you are lucky m you may also spot the Nilgiri tahr. Four species of primates - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, the common langur, and the Bonnet Macaque are also found here.
Even the bird-watchers will have a nice time here. Darters, cormorants, kingfishers, the great Malabar hornbill and racket-tailed Drongos can be spotted. Well, even reptiles like Monitor lizards, Python and King Cobra, amphibians, fishes and butterflies can be seen often.
How to Reach Periyar National Park
Kochi or Madurai in Tamil Nadu airport is closest to Periyar.
You can reach Kottayam railway station from any major India city and then proceed towards the park.
Kumily, the nearest town from Periyar, can be reached both state and private buses from Kottayam, Ernakulam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
