About Nagarjunakonda
Nagarjunakonda is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India. The city of Nagarjunakonda was discovered in the year 1926 and here the University was founded by the great Buddhist scholar Nagarjuna.
Nagarjunakonda was one of the greatest places of Buddhist learning. Nagarjunakonda is located on the banks of River Krishna at a distance of 65 kilometers from Vijayawada. Here the Stupas have exquisite sculptures portraying scenes from the Buddha�s life. The main stupa is called the Mahachaitya and contains the sanctified small tooth and an earring of the Buddha.
Tourist Attractions
While journeying through the city of Nagarjunakonda, the main attractions of the city are the remains of the stupas, chaityas, viharas and mandapas along with white marble carvings and sculptures rendering the life of the Buddha.
The Mahachaitya or the Great Stupa at Nagarjunakonda is a set of discased stupas with plastered brickwork over it. The stupa is adorned with a big garland-ornament. The Great Stupa is 32.3 meters in diameter, 18 meters high and 4 meters wide. In the plan, the stupa appears as a cartwheel with its hub, felly and spokes.
