Mamallapuram or Mahabalipuram is located in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Tourist Attractions:
Thirukkalukundram is a major tourist spot in Mahabalipuram, which has a small Shiva temple and is situated on top of the Vedagiri Hill, 160 meters high. Every day, just before noon, two white kites stop at the temple and the temple priests feed them. According to the legends, these two birds are actually saints who stop at the temple to take a rest on their flight between Varanasi and Rameshwaram. A big Shiva temple is also there in this area.
The Shore Temple is the oldest temple has twin structural shrines and is magnificently located on the shore of the Bay of Bengal.
There are Five Rathas or five monolithic chariots located on the south of the mound holding the cave temples. Each chariot is chiselled out of one single rock and the rathas are known as the Pancha Pandava Rathas.
The Krishna Cave, among the nine rock-cut cave temples, is notable for its realistic portrayal. The other significant cave is the Mahishasuramardhini Cave.
