Asiatic Lion

"The man that once did sell the lion's skin While the beast lived, was killed with hunting him"- Shakespeare

Asiatic Lions are the last remnants of the wild species of lions that emerged from the Caucasus and the Yemen variety of Lions. Gir National Park Gujarat of India has 300 varieties of this species of Asiatic Lions. In India they are known as Indian Lions, while in Iran they are called Persian Lions.

They are also known as Lord of Beasts because of their sovereign behavior and attitude. They are also related to throne, and it is thus evident that royalty is integrally linked with these wild animals. They are gorgeously displayed in the temple engravings of Mahabalipuram.

Actually Emperor Asoka was the first to use the symbolism of lions in his coins and that was adopted by the Indian Government after independence so that in our cash notes we find the picture of Lions that stand as a symbol of royalty.

Conservation of Lion in Gir Forest has been an attempt of the Government to secure the lives of these royal animals. The most astonishing fact about these animals is that they refrain from preying even if they fine a delicious prey in front of them, if their stomach is full. This indicates their royal nature and there is lack of this character among other animals in the forest. There fore the Lions deserve awe and admiration beyond all.
