The Indian Cobra is a very poisonous snake. It is characterized by black eyes, wide neck and head, a wide black band below the neck and half rings on either side of the hood. It preys on rodents, lizards, frogs, rats, mice and is capable of swallowing its prey whole.
It takes a very distinctive posture when it feels threatened. One third portion of the body is raised, the long flexible neck ribs are elongated and the hood is formed. Its weapon while defending itself or while attacking others is the venom which it can spit from a distance of six and half feet. The venom can even blind you. The bite of the Indian Cobra can also prove to be very fatal.
Presently the Indian cobra is not an endangered species. However it is threatened because the hood markings are being used in the production of hand bags and so it is being hunted.
Another striking characteristic of the Indian Cobra is the attention that it gives to its eggs than is generally common with other kinds of snakes.
Of all the poisonous snakes the King Cobra is the largest. The King Cobra feeds on smaller snakes. This snake is extremely dangerous because it can bite you without any kind of provocation.
The Indian Cobra continues to be very awe inspiring. It is venerated by the Indians and that is evident from the fact that every year the Nagpanchami or the Serpent festival is celebrated.
The Indian Cobra is found in the Manas Wildlife sanctuary and in the National parks of Corbett, Namdhapa and Sunderbans.
