The Black Buck is characterized by ringed horns. The animal's upper part is black in color while the lower part and the area around the eyes are white in color. They are usually seen in herds in the open plains. They do not dwell in the dense dark forests.
This antelope is found throughout the country and is commonly referred to as the kala harin. One of the most remarkable characteristic of this animal is that it can run at a great speed. It is capable of beating any other animal in long distance races. It has earned reputation for its speed.
The chief weapon of the Black Buck being its ability to run swiftly, it prefers open stretches of land so that it can escape easily in case it is attacked by enemies.
Initially the body color of the females is light brown and that of the males is dark brown but with the passage of time they tend to darken. The Black coat distinguishes the dominant male member from the other weaker members of the herd.
It is rather disappointing to know that the number of Black Bucks is steadily declining. The sight of these animals roaming about freely in the plains is very rare. In India, the Black Buck is found in the Velavadar Black Buck Sanctuary in Saurashtra and in the Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh.
