Introduction to Rajaji National Park
The Rajaji National Park is located across an area of 820 sq kms at the Himalayan foothills. It is eminent for the unspoiled beauty of the landscape and the rich bio diversity of the region. There were three sanctuaries. The Shivaliks-rajaji, Motichur and Chilla were integrated into a single protected area called the Rajaji National Park. It is named after the well known freedom fighter, Sri C.Rajgopalachari, popularly called Rajaji.
Description of Rajaji National Park
The Rajaji National Park is spread across an area of 820.42 sq kms. It displays a splendid ecosystem, of the Shivalik ranges and the Indo gangetic plains. There are distinct varieties of vegetation displayed at Rajaji National park, ranging from Riverine forests, broad leaf mixed forests, Chirpine forests as well as scrubs and graasy pastures. There are as many as 23 species of mammals as well as over 315 species of avifauna. These include tigers, leopards, jungle cats, Sambar, cheetal, barking deer, wild boar, sloth, bear, langorr, monitor lizards, python, king cobra and a wide variety of birds such as pea fowl, hornbill, woodpeckers. Thrushes, parakeet, kingfisher , Indian roller, finch and others. In winter, the Rajaji National Park is the home to a large variety of migratory birds, at the banks of River Ganga. This national park in Uttaranchal is also the North Western limit of Asian elephants. The Rajaji national Park is thus a favorite of wildlife conservationists, nature lovers and eco friendly visitors.
How to reach Rajaji National Park
Here are a number of way to reach the Rajaji National Park.there are regular bus services and overnight trains that are available for Dehradun and Haridwar from Delhi and Lucknow. The Dehradun Delhi State Highway is an important western boundary of the national park in Uttaranchal. Chila is only 8 km away from Haridwar railway station which is connected well with the major metropolitan citied. The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport, a few kms from the Northern boundaries of the Rajaji National Park.
